Fanzine: an exhibition and zine by Girl Gang Leeds

We’re launching our brand new zine – it’s a fanzine about fans!

This exhibition will feature the amazing artists we’re showcasing in our zine, and will be your first chance to buy it.

✨FREE ENTRY – EVERYONE WELCOME✨

We’re celebrating, talking about and featuring ideas about:

– Our experiences as women/non-binary/gender non-conforming superfans
– Having your legitimacy as a fan questioned due to your femme/nb identity
– Being labelled a ‘fangirl’
– What it means to be a fan
– Unapologetic fandoms
– Negative experiences of superfan culture
– Positive experiences of superfan culture
– Why it’s important to emphatically support the things you love.

Come down to our exhibition space in Headingley to get your hands on a new zine and support some local artists ♥

This is a joint project between all our girl gangs! We’ve taken submissions from Leeds / Manchester / Sheffield / Edinburgh and beyond.

The House That Heals The Soul: Digital Collections

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-house-that-heals-the-soul-workshop-with-shy-bairns-tickets-42908582726?aff=es2

Join Shy Bairns as they work with our Designers in Residence, Jamie Hudson and Orlando Lloyd, for a workshop as part of the exhibition, The House That Heals The Soul. This workshop will explore how digital matter on the internet are grouped into collections, be it through websites like YouTube, Instagram, or the photos saved on your phone. Workshop attendees should come with a smart phone, tablet or laptop, and Shy Bairns will work with them to print a collection. Alongside this, there will be smaller drawing and collage activities.

This workshop will teach you how to use you the processes and tools that go in to making small-run and DIY publications with this Northern zine collective. Participants are welcome to make an optional pay as you feel donation at the end of the workshop to cover material costs. At the end of the session you will have a publication or printed matter to take home. Copies will be kept and distributed by Shy Bairns, one copy will stay in the exhibition’s growing library and the other will be for you to take home or distribute.

The House That Heals the Soul is both an exhibition and a functioning publishing studio. Its presentation at The Tetley coincides with the International Contemporary Artists’ Book Fair. See our website for more information.

Shy Bairns’ self titled series includes work from anyone who calls the North ‘home’. Their first publication, The Only Pizza Shop Where I Live Burnt Down, was released December 2016, with a second, Where’s Your Coat You’re Going To Be Cold, following in April 2017. Both zines intended to gather northern creatives together on one platform, creating a community regardless of medium, level, background or theme. Their third zine of the series is on it’s way. Other past projects involve curated shows at Caustic Coastal, Salford, and online @ isthisit.com, and zine making workshops ran for Middlesbrough Art Weekender 2017 and Pen Fight Distro in Manchester.

LGBT History Month event

Celebrate LGBT History Month at Leeds City Museum with this FREE programme of films, stalls, activities and talks organised by Leeds Queer Film Festival on 18 February 2017 11-3pm. All are welcome to come along and get involved!

A selection of films on LGBT History from our past festivals will be screened and we’ll be having a panel discussion on local LGBT history.

There’ll be stalls of various local LGBT community groups so that you can find out about the great long-running and more recent LGBT support groups, campaigning groups and social groups in our city. This will be a great opportunity to find out about the work they do, how to get involved, support them, or how to get access to services you need.

We’ll also have various activities and workshops so you can tell your own story or just have some fun! They’ll all be on a drop-in basis throughout the day (apart from the filmmaking workshop). Workshops will include:
– LGBT History-themed Zine-In-A-Day with Footprint Workers Co-op
– Make a Thaumatrope (lo-fi animation) with Hannah McCann
– Kendama with Ingi
– Monoprinting with Susie Rumsby (of Leeds Print Workshop)
– Clay Pendant making with Kim Searle (Darn It Workshops)
– Queer DIY Filmmaking workshop (This will be the second day of the workshop with the first day taking place in the museum on February 11. Information on the workshop and how to book a place is available here:https://www.facebook.com/events/404998579840919).

We’ll also be releasing the Leeds Queer Film Festival programme for our 2017 festival (24-26 March) and selling advance weekend passes.

Access information for the venue is available here: http://www.leeds.gov.uk/museumsandgalleries/Pages/leedscitymuseum/Access-at-Leeds-City-Museum.aspx

Etsy Made Local: Leeds Make Your Own Fun: Zine Workshop

Create your own self-published book with zine-maker and comic book creator Kristyna Baczynski. Zines can really be about anything, from outlandish and imaginary tales to confessions and secret obsessions.

Whether it’s a pocket-sized pamphlet cataloguing your favourite pets, or a fold-out map charting your dream adventure, this workshop will help you take your zine ideas from brain to paper.

During this workshop we will make a range of different styles of zine and fill the pages with content using drawing and writing prompts, as well as cut-up collage, hand lettering and lots more!

The workshop is being held as part of the Etsy Made Local: Leeds Christmas Market.  The class will take place in the Denny Room on the Lower Ground Floor.

Minimum Age for participants is 16.
