Zine Workshop – Edinburgh

Join Butterfly Conservations Bog Squad in collaboration with the Edinburgh Zine Library for a fun workshop in a fantastic location at the Botanic Cottage, RBGE!

What is a zine? – A zine is a kind of mini mixed-media magazine which is handmade/self-published. They are made by many writers, artists and creators on a range of themes, interests or passions – see examples that Bog Squad have made for events at bogsquad.weebly.com/peatlands-for-people.html. Zines are a great way of getting information out there, so can be tailored to any subject and can be easily reproduced with just a photocopier. They are a really fun and relaxing activity with lots of cutting and gluing involved to create something truly unique!

What will we be doing? – This event will be a chance for attendees to hear about the work BC is doing in peatland restoration, climate change, sustainability and nature conservation.

There will be time for skill sharing, networking and perhaps a walk outdoors (weather permitting) for inspiration.

We will be working on a collaborative zine on the topics discussed and attendees will also have the opportunity to make their own mini zines about their thoughts on the day. We’ll be providing all the materials – paper, pens, glue, paint, stamps, stickers, magazines/media to cut out – but if you have some art supplies/reference materials you’d like to use in your zine do feel free to bring them along!

This event is primarily being run for adults although interested young people are also more than welcome.

How to book – it is completely FREE TO ATTEND however the venue had LIMITED CAPACITY so we do ask that if you want to come along that you CONTACT US TO BOOK A SPACE.

TO BOOK A SPACE PLEASE CONTACT – Rebecca Crawford on rcrawford@butterfly-conservation.org

For more zine workshops see our events page on Facebook.

#2050StartsNow – Zine Making Workshop

Our climate is dramatically changing, yet where are all our stories to reflect this? We hear about climate change in news reports and scientific studies, but why is it missing from other narratives – art, literature, music. In order to shift to a more just and sustainable society, what kind of stories should we be telling? As part of Book Week Scotland, #2050StartsNow – Zine Making Workshop is an interactive, hands-on session making a one-of-a-kind publication! If you are a young, creative individual interested in creating a zine around sustainability issues, come along, have a drink & get crafty with like-minded people.

This includes Mannequin Factory, Sleet Walls, Invisible Maggot, All-Night Vigil, Saddo & more!

Our ART FAIR runs as part of The Number Shop’s exhibition series MELON for the 2017 Edinburgh Art Festival, which currently holds artworks by Flo Gordon and Joe Coghill in our project spaces.

The MELON Art Fair is open to all – join us if you wish to sell some of your own artwork or trade with other artists!

We hope you’ll come along for an evening sights, sounds and smells!

Edinburgh Zine Library: Open Meeting No.1

Come along to the first Open Meeting of the Edinburgh Zine Library. Learn more about the zines, the zine library and how to get involved.

There’ll be a short presentation (15 minutes) about the ZIne Library Project, followed by a drop-in and a chance to chat to us about volunteering and other ways to get involved. Bring your own zines if you want to submit them, bring yourselves. You don’t need any experience, just an interest in zines, archiving, diy cultures, social history or libraries. The George Washington Browne room is located on the mezzanie adjacent to the music library. If you’re unsure how to find it – ask the lovely people at the library reception, they’ll be more than happy to help!

We want the library to be as accessible as possible so we, the Edinburgh Zine Library, operate a safe space policy throughout our organisation and all our meetings – you can have a read of it here if you’re unsure what that means: https://edinburghzinelibrary.wordpress.com/safe-space-agreement/

If you have any questions about the accessibility of the meeting or the meeting room please just ask. We are in the process of checking wheelchair accessibility and will keep the page updated – if you do use a wheelchair or other mobility aid please just let us know and we can easily accomodate you. Although we only accept volunteers and members over the age of 18, if you have children you are welcome to bring them to this first meeting.

If you are unable to attend the meeting (we know festival time can be hectic, and that unfamiliar group meetings don’t suit everyone) but want to be involved please send us an email: edinburghzinelibrary@gmail.com or a message on facebook and we can arrange individual meetings, or work to find a way for you to be involved that works for you!

We look forward to meeting you all there!

Making History: a Feminist Craft Project

Historically, and in the present day, women’s achievements and contributions to society have been erased from history – let’s change that! Join us at the Lothian Health Services Archive to explore our materials on women’s history, and make our own history through a crafty zine-making session. All are welcome!

If you can’t make this date, the same workshop will be repeated on February 20th: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/making-history-a-feminist-craft-project-tickets-31150319444?aff=es2
