DESCRIPTION:Agency : Make your Mark is a participatory zine-making project created throughout the summer at Arnolfini\, conceived and facilitated by artist Rachael House. \n\nAgency : Make your Mark talks about how we survive\, and pass on ideas of how to make things better\, for ourselves\, other people and the planet. In tiny ways – or thinking on a BIG scale. “It’s important to remember that we have some agency in the world\, and that our actions have consequences”. \nIn 2016\, in times just as difficult as the late 1970s\, zines are still a way for us to connect with each other\, to have a voice. We don’t have to be ‘experts’\, zines are for all of us\, we all have something to say and a need to be heard. Small lo-fi publications\, we can use zines to reach out to others\, to campaign\, to find our people\, locally\, nationally and internationally. \nNo previous experience necessary\, this is a drop-in activity for all ages and abilities produced by artist Rachael House – just come along\, join-in and DIY. \nSaturday August 13  1-5pm\, Gallery 1 \nRachael will present tips on how to ‘zine’ and audiences are invited to discover how to make their own one-off zine using a single sheet of A4 paper and/or contribute a single page (or two or three) to a larger zine\, to be published after the summer. \n  \nAgency : Make your Mark zine sessions continue every day throughout August & September in Gallery 1 facilitated by Arnolfini project volunteers. \n  \nSaturday 10 September 11-5pm\, Gallery 1 \nDuring this final session\, Rachael will present a short performative talk about zine culture. The rest of the session will be for both audiences and participants to view and select works made throughout the summer to be collated and layed out to create a final printed zine. \n  \nRachael House is an artist lucky and unlucky enough to come of age in the punk era. She carries with her from that time a belief in DIY; if you want something to happen you can make it happen. From dyeing your hair\, forming a band\, customising your clothes to making a zine. \nRachael makes events\, objects\, performances\, comic strips and zines. In the 1990s Rachael was part of the thriving queerzine scene\, with her autobiographical comic Red Hanky Panky. She continues to make zines and comic strips as part of and alongside her fine art practice. Her recent projects and exhibitions include Focus on Feminism and Gender\, New Hall Art Collection\, Cambridge\, There Is An Alternative! Critical Comics and Cartoons\, University of Kent\, Comix Creatrix- 100 women making comics at House of Illustration\, London\, Queer Feminist Disco at Bent Fest\, Powerlunches\, London\, Feminism and zines- changing the world with comic strips\, part of Future Perfect: The Changing Face of Girls’ Comics\, LJMU Special Collections and Archives\, Liverpool and Challenge Heteronormativity at the V&A\, London. \nJoin in the conversation using #bristolpunk.

DESCRIPTION:Zine writers Tali Soares and Fliss Collier curate this exhibition\, gathering zines from Milton Keynes and surrounds to Belgium\, Brazil and beyond. \nSW Zines presents a zine library for the public to browse on the theme of “making art in small towns”. The exhibition explores the different work of artists who have grown up or lived in small towns including written statements from zine creators about their experiences. \nZines are a form of self-publishing – the artist creates at home\, many are/were teenagers working from their bedrooms. 60s/70s music fanzines\, especially punk\, influenced generations. Zines are widely made today – the art of cutting\, pasting\, photocopying\, is alive in suburbs across the world. Reaching out\, speaking up\, zines connect in a unique way. \nThere will be a library of zines to explore\, and a chance to talk to Tali and Fliss. Free mini zines will be on offer\, as well as a range of zines from various artists to buy.

DESCRIPTION:If Salford Zine Library had a PR company and a marketing budget we’d have been dropping hints about what we’re calling “Two Thousand and Sixzine” for ages now. Or at least once during the first five months of the year. But here is the hint now: Two Thousand and Sixzine: the Year of the Zine is the dramatic sounding name for a programme of cool stuff that the zine library are going to be organising over the next 10 months or so (we’re cheating and creeping into Two Thousand and Sevenzine: the Second Year of the Zine).\nMore information on all those events later\, but here’s details of the first one we’re doing. \nZine Club #1 is going to be on May 28th between 2pm and 5pm in the workshop space at Manchester Craft and Design Centre. It’s FREE to take part and you don’t need to book – just drop-in if you have a spare half an hour. Essentially we’ve booked a room for nice people to come and hang out\, chat about zines and work on their own stuff. And if you’ve never made a zine before\, we’ll give you some pointers! SUMMARY:Zine Afternoon at Putney Library
DESCRIPTION:Zines (or fanzines) are self-published pamphlets/magazines and can be about any topic. They are made using cut and paste techniques\, and photocopying. This afternoon of zines invites zine readers and anyone who is curious to come and immerse themselves in zines! The afternoon include stalls of zines to browse and buy: across topics such as music\, gardening\, travel\, health\, feminism\, politics\, as well as comics. There will also be talks\, including with feminist-punk zine writer\, Nina of Echo Publishing in Belgium who is travelling over for the event. Zine writer and eating disorder activist Vicky Smith will be joining us. We will also be joined by Brazilian zine writer Tali who recently had an arts residency at the Grow Heathrow green community project. There will be an exhibition of zine work from across the years by Fliss Collier\, who has been making zines/fanzines since 1996: the exhibition celebrates her 20th anniversary with zines.

DESCRIPTION:The No Fly on the WALL Academy opens its doors again this month for another event. This year\, as well as our monthly brunches and regular events\, we will be hosting a series of guest workshops facilitated by people we admire. In this series there will be workshops led by Tobi Oredein of Black Ballad\, Chama ‘Kay’ Kapumpa\, Rudy Loewe\, and Seyi Newell of TRiBE. \nThe first workshop in this series was led by Tobi Oredein\, writer and editor of Black Ballad\, a UK lifestyle website which explores the human experience through the diverse lens of Black and mixed-race women living in Britain. The second workshop in this series will be led by non-binary artist\, Rudy Loewe. \nIn this creative workshop\, artist Rudy Loewe invites participants to share our stories and histories by making zines. The session will begin with a space to discuss what narratives we feel are not being told. Who controls the stories and perspectives of black people? What histories and lived experiences do we want to bring to the forefront? What is the role of Afrofuturism in sharing the current experiences that black people face? \nAll levels of experience are welcome. If you have never made a zine\, or would not usually engage in creativity\, there will be no expectation of ability\, so please feel welcome to join. \n**This workshop is for all black folks who are part of the African & Caribbean diaspora.**\n—————————————————————————————- \n\n\n\nNo Fly on the WALL is a platform to discuss and celebrate Intersectional Feminism. SUMMARY:London Radical Bookfair
DESCRIPTION:Radical booksellers\, publishers\, artists and activists of all stripes are setting up in the Great Hall at Goldsmiths University to host the 4th London Radical Bookfair. \nWith over 130 exhibitors and 20 guest speakers\, this will be a unique gathering of progressive readers\, thinkers and doers\, in a celebration of radical publishing and politics. \nThe free event is organised by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers (ARB)\, which formed in 2011 to raise awareness of the radical book trade. The fair provides an annual opportunity to bring Britain’s radical booksellers together to meet in person with publishers and the reading public. \nAnd it’s also an opportunity for us to host award ceremonies for the ARB’s two annual book prizes — the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing and the Little Rebels Children’s Book Award. Shortlisted authors from the two awards will give talks and participate in panel discussions throughout the day. \nAs in previous years\, we’ll be showcasing the depth and breadth of radical publishing. While there are currently other book fairs dedicated to progressive titles\, they tend to focus on tightly defined political traditions. The aim of the London Radical Bookfair is to be a broad church that brings together these traditions and make them accessible to a wider audience.

Photobooks play a vital role in the world of self-publishing and often cross over with artists’ books and zines as they are cheap self-published formats. \nThe library has developed a collection of international photobooks ranging from key historic titles\, to more conceptual and contemporary publications. The show and tell will feature a wide range of photobooks\, photo-zines\, and artists’ books which explore the developments of the photobook.
