SUMMARY:Workshop + Zine Making: Seeing beyond the crises - The Role of Radical Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:In our current context of Trump in the Whitehouse\, austerity and crises across Europe\, the rise of the far right and the ever looming threat of catastrophic climate change it can be hard to find hope for radical social change these days. \nIn this participatory workshop we’ll explore what it feels like to live in this world and examine the role speculative fiction\, such as Ursula Le Guin’ – The Dispossessed or Marge Piercy ‘s – Woman on the Edge of Time\, can play in helping us imagine better futures. \nWe’ll also have the chance to make our own zines of the futures we imagine. \nThe workshop will be held at Grow Heathrow\, who some say is a squat-topia in our time. After the workshop stay for the open mic night and party from 7pm. There will be spaces for guests to stay the night.

SUMMARY:London Radical Bookfair 2017
DESCRIPTION:Radical booksellers\, publishers\, artists and activists of all stripes are setting up in the Great Hall at Goldsmiths University to host the 5th London Radical Bookfair.  \nWith over 130 exhibitors and 20 guest speakers\, this will be a unique gathering of progressive readers\, thinkers and doers\, in a celebration of radical publishing and politics.  \nThe free event is organised by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers (ARB)\,  which formed in 2011 to raise awareness of the radical book trade. The fair provides an annual opportunity to bring Britain’s radical booksellers together to meet in person with publishers and the reading public. \nAnd it’s also an opportunity for us to host award ceremonies for the ARB’s two annual book prizes — the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing and the Little Rebels Children’s Book Award. Shortlisted authors from the two awards will give talks and participate in panel discussions throughout the day. \nAs in previous years\, we’ll be showcasing the depth and breadth of radical publishing. While there are currently other book fairs dedicated to progressive titles\, they tend to focus on tightly defined political traditions. The aim of the London Radical Bookfair is to be a broad church that brings together these traditions and make them accessible to a wider audience. \nThis year’s bookfair is supported by the Centre for Cultural Studies\, with the Departments of English and Comparative Literature\, Media and Communications\, Politics and International Relations\, Sociology\, Visual Culture\, and Goldsmiths Press.  Goldsmiths\, University of London. http://www.gold.ac.uk/

SUMMARY:Zine Launch - Howl of the Runt
DESCRIPTION:After a brief hiatus\, the Runt is back to baffle minds once again! \nFor issue 10 of our beloved zine\, our theme is that of Madness.\nForever the booty call of controversy\, we selected this theme in order to generate the question: what does it mean to be ‘mad’? \nFor some\, this was a way to channel their appreciation of authors such as Lewis Carroll or Edgar Allan Poe into loving homage.\nOthers provided some thought provoking pieces that reflected on mental illness\, and how we view it today. \nWe’ve collected all of our favourite pieces and published the tenth issue of the Runt\, and we’re gong to launch it in style!\nAs usual\, there will be guest speakers\, baked goods and good company. \nIn honour of Bloomsday\, we’ll also be giving anyone that comes along the chance to participate in a collaborative re-writing of James Joyce’s Ulysses. Literary immortality awaits you! \nA mere €4 euro gains you entry\, a free copy of the zine and at least one cookie/bun. \nSo come along\, laugh\, cry and descend into madness with us!

SUMMARY:Queer Zine-Making and Crafting!
DESCRIPTION:That’s right\, it’s a crafternoon\, but in the morning. \nWhat?\nA chance to sit round a table with a bunch of lovely people and chat about life\, work on some projects\, bring your own knitting/cross-stitch/badge making/paper/pens/snacks etc. I myself will be collaging my very first zine and yes you can borrow my scissors. \nIt’ll be a very chill event\, for people who want to pull up a chair and get stuck in as opposed to looking for a workshop/teacher. That being said\, if you have a crafting skill and wanna share\, bring it! There’ll be people who might love to learn how to do that thing. \nWhere?\nThe lovely Feminist Library team have let us have their big meeting room to spread out in. They ask for a donation of £3 (or more if you can afford it!) to help support them\, or a tiny bit more if like me you will be using the photocopier a lot. If this would be a barrier to you coming then have a private word with me beforehand- no-one will be turned away for lack of funds! \nHow?\nThe location is The Feminist Library\, near Waterloo and Elephant & Castle stations. There is a lift that reaches pavement level and they would like people to let them know in advance if they need to use this entrance so they can prepare it (open the shutter). Otherwise there are 5 steps from the main door to the lift. Let me know if you have any other access requirements and I can ask for more info/put you in contact with them. \nWho?\nThis event is for queer women\, trans and non-binary people\, all of whom have amazing hair and at least one denim jacket each. \nI’LL BRING THE HUMMUS.

DESCRIPTION:New monthly zine club at The Making Space! Bring along your latest zine to work on\, come along to learn more about zines\, or just come and sit and chat with a cuppa! \nZine club is free but if you want to use any Making Space materials (and there’s A LOT! We may have a photocopier by then too) then a donation to the space would be lovely. \nPlease note this isn’t a zine making workshop and is more of a social/own project thing. There will be zine making workshops in the future\, but zine club is for working on your own thing\, browsing the zine library\, collaborating or just coming along to have a chat and see what it’s about 🙂 \nThe Making Space is in the basement of the Media Centre (the main building with reception) but as it’s the weekend the front entrance will be closed. If you come round the back there’s a door on Friendly St with lots of doorbells\, we’re in L13. \nI’ll probably bring some kind of vegan friendly cake/snacks\, if anyone else wants to bring some to share that would be lovely!
