In part one\, you’ll work with Andrew to get inspiration for your poems through a selection of exercises and look at how to develop and polish them ready for publication in your Zine. \nIn part two\, it’s time to get Zine-making! Having had time to develop your poetry\, you’ll work with Dizzy Ink to create an anthology of everyone’s poems using Dizzy’s specialist printing process Risograph. Through group and individual activities\, you’ll learn how to work with image and layout as you design and edit your publication. You’ll walk away with copies of your publications so you can showcase and share what you’ve created\, and the work will also contribute to the Zines touring exhibition. \nBook now and turn your ideas into ink. \nWhat is a Zine? \nZines are self-made and self-published magazines. They’re motivated by freedom of expression rather than profit\, and are created using various techniques such as collage\, drawing and writing. Often photocopied and hand stapled\, their DIY aesthetic and self-directed content makes them an empowering and democratic medium. \nAbout Andrew Graves \nAndrew Graves (formerly known as the MulletProof Poet) regularly performs his work throughout the UK andhas appeared on TV and radio on programmes including BBC 6 Music’s Cerys Matthews Show and the recent BBC 4 documentary Evidently John Cooper Clarke. SUMMARY:Drop-in workshop: Zines & artist’s books with simple bookbinding
DESCRIPTION:The last in a series of four drop-in creative workshop days\, looking at ways to create DIY publications and explore self-expression. \nThis workshop offers a chance to try out\, practice\, or combine skills from our previous workshops in the series\, working on a theme of living with invisible illness. Try writing about your experiences\, express your ideas with simple printmaking techniques\, drawing\, or collage and create your own zine\, or bind your pages as a pamphlet or artist’s book. \nThe workshops are open to Medway residents 16+ years old who are affected by invisible illness – those with illnesses themselves\, but also carers\, partners\, friends or family etc. living in the Medway towns. The sessions are offered free thanks to a small grant from Involving Medway\, as part of Medway Clinical Commissioning Group’s work with community health. \nTaking place during December and January\, a time of year that people with illness can find difficult\, these workshops offer a non-festive oasis and a supportive\, uplifting space to explore self-reflection and creative skills. There will be a friendly welcome\, snacks and refreshments. \nYou don’t need to have attended previous days\, each class and drop-in session is a separate event and you are welcome to attend as many or few as you like. \nNo previous experience is needed\, this is a supportive session for you to self-reflect and try out making DIY publications as a way to cope with\, heal from\, or understand your situation in a different way. Participating may lead to communicating your feelings to other people\, or may offer useful tools to use privately for self care. \nA two-hour morning book binding class complements this drop-in session – please book in advance if you are interested in that too. DESCRIPTION:A workshop for people who want to learn how to use printmaking to communicate ideas and stories in visual ways. In two hours\, artist Xtina Lamb will show you simple methods to create effective graphics with print techniques including relief printing and stencils. \nZines are small self-published magazines\, focused on a particular topic or theme. We’ll be looking at printmaking methods that go particularly well with zine-making. All the materials you need will be on hand\, and we’ll have a Risograph machine and inkjet printer as additional ways to reproduce multiples quickly. \nThe workshop is open to Medway residents 16+ years old who are affected by invisible illness – those with illnesses themselves\, but also carers\, partners\, friends or family etc. living in the Medway towns. \nNo previous experience of printmaking is needed\, this is a session for you to explore image making as a way to cope with\, heal from\, or understand invisible illness in different ways. You may chose to use the methods to create your own mini-zine\, or contribute to a collaborative zine\, or maybe use the skill to develop your own personal projects. \nIn the afternoon a separate 3 hour drop-in session will run\, allowing people to continue with their printmaking\, or read our collection of health-related zines\, or create zines in a variety of ways. SUMMARY:Zine Club! Manchester with Shy Bairns
DESCRIPTION:Shy Bairns will be running a workshop using collage materials and a risograph printer\, aiming to create a collaborative zine loosely based around themes of community and local identity. \nShy Bairns is multi-disciplinary collective specialising in DIY arts publications. Their first publication in their self titled series\, The Only Pizza Shop Where I Live Burnt Down\, was released December 2016\, with a second\,Where’s Your Coat You’re Going To Be Cold\, following in April 2017. Both zines intended to gather northern creatives together on one platform\, creating a community regardless of medium\, level\, background or theme. Other past projects involve curated shows at Caustic Coastal\, Manchester and online @ isthisit.com\, alongside zine making workshops ran for Middlesbrough Art Weekender 2017. Shy Bairns usually print in muti-coloured riso unless they absolutely can not do that then will reluctantly roll their eyes and print like normies. Shy Bairns consists of Erin Blamire\, Izzy Kroese\, Georgia Gibson and Elle Haswell. All creatives involved can be found here. \n\nZine Club is a space where anyone can read\, make zines\, collaborate\, be shown what a zine is and how to make one\, work on an existing project\, or ask more seasoned zine-makers any practical questions. \nJust come and have a nice hang out and a chat with us! Zines to read and materials will be provided\, but feel free to bring along anything you might want to use or donate. \nAll welcome. Zine Club is FREE but donations will be very welcome to cover materials and to raise money for Partisan.
