SUMMARY:Zine Workshop - An Open Library with Ellen Welsh
DESCRIPTION:ZINE WORKSHOP with artist and zinemaker Ellen Welsh \n…an Open Library event at The Women Artists of the North East Library on Saturday 26th May 1-4pm. \nAnybody can make a zine! This workshop offers an introduction to making zines – absolute beginners and seasoned zinesters equally welcome. \nWHAT’S A ZINE?\nA zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN;) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images\, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are either the product of a single person or of a very small group and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation.\nWHY MAKE A ZINE?\nAs with other kinds of artworks\, zines offer an accessible way to express appreciation\, affection\, anger\, sadness\, and catharsis. Or they can be made just Because. Zines have often been a medium for marginalised voices; an important tool for expressing stories and identities that rejects\, or are rejected by\, mainstream society.\nWHAT’S THIS WORKSHOP ABOUT?\nWe will be looking at the artist’s own zines\, which often form part of her artistic practice\, and her sources of inspiration for these. We will be having a chat about the history and different kinds of zines you can find in the world (fanzines\, art zines\, political zines\, queer zines\, perzines etc.)\nBut most of all we will be learning how to make your own zine\, and how to reproduce it. The workshop will be a relaxed space to learn and experiment with different techniques such as collage\, drawing\, writing\, sewing\, and putting together different sizes and formats of zines! The focus of this workshop will be DIY cut-and-paste zine making\, rather than digital techniques.\nInformation will also be available on how to reproduce\, bind\, and distribute your zines. \nMaterials will be provided\, but please feel free to bring anything additional you would like to use\, such as paper\, scissors\, stickers\, tape\, books\, magazines etc. \nCome and have a flick through some zines\, try your hand at making your own\, or just soak up the cut-n-paste vibes of the afternoon. \nEllen Welsh \nEllen Welsh is a recent fine art graduate from Newcastle University and studio member at The Newbridge Project\, Gateshead. Blurring the line between zines and artists’ books\, she uses text and image and often invites the viewer to handle her work. Taking inspiration from confessional perzines of the 1990s such as Doris\, she aims to cultivate an intimacy between the maker and the viewer. She hopes to express something about memory\, nostalgia\, temporality and diaristic experience to whoever is looking at her art.\nEllen is currently working on Issue 3 of her zine ‘Sapphic’ – a collaborative zine which pulls together writing and artwork by bisexual\, lesbian and queer women in order to affirm solidarity between these groups\, and the importance of queer spaces and story-telling. \nLinks to more of Ellen’s work:\nArtist blog: https://ellenwelsh.wordpress.com/\nShop & website: https://www.etsy.com/shop/letterstoanisland

SUMMARY:Northwest Zinefest 2018
DESCRIPTION:After a year off\, Northwest Zinefest is back! This time we’re going to be at Partisan Collective\, an independent\, community led\, DIY space on Cheetham Hill Road in Manchester. It’s going to be on Sunday May 6th\, so get it pencilled in your diaries (or wherever you keep track of your appointments) now. \nWe’re planning to have about 40 tables selling ace zines made by ace people. You could even be one of those ace people – applications for stalls are open NOW. Just go here to find out more about the application process: https://northwestzinefest.wordpress.com/ \nThis year we’re trying something new to make things easier for people who identify as either LBGTQIA and/or have other accessibility barriers which make paying for a table a barrier to being a stallholder. Check out the application form for info on how to claim a free half table at the zinefest. Thanks very much to those people who have donated money to Salford Zine Library and made this scheme possible! \nEntry to Northwest Zinefest is free and we’ll also have a whole programme of talks and workshops for you to enjoy. We’ll share more details soon. In the meantime\, apply for a table and/or tell your friends because this is gonna be a good one.

See our website for more information. \nShy Bairns’ self titled series includes work from anyone who calls the North ‘home’. Their first publication\, The Only Pizza Shop Where I Live Burnt Down\, was released December 2016\, with a second\, Where’s Your Coat You’re Going To Be Cold\, following in April 2017. Both zines intended to gather northern creatives together on one platform\, creating a community regardless of medium\, level\, background or theme. Their third zine of the series is on it’s way. Other past projects involve curated shows at Caustic Coastal\, Salford\, and online @ isthisit.com\, and zine making workshops ran for Middlesbrough Art Weekender 2017 and Pen Fight Distro in Manchester. \nWebsite: https://www.shybairns.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Zine Making Workshop with Holly Casio
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate women artists\, activists\, community leaders\, musicians\, family members and unsung heroes in this Women in Focus themed zine making workshop. \nWhat are zines?\nZines are self-published DIY documents with a history rooted in radical publishing. Using cut and paste collage\, writing and art\, you can make your own publication dedicated to putting your heroes in the spotlight. No artistic skill\, experience\, or technical expertise is necessary – anyone can make a zine! \nAbout the facilitator\n \nHolly Casio is a zine maker\, writer and workshop facilitator. She uses collage\, text and illustrations to create zines and comix relating to mental health\, queer identity and pop culture\, as well as using zines to share information around politics and activism. She uses cut-and-paste DIY methods of creating zines and comix to demystify the self-publishing process\, making zines cheap and accessible to all. \nFind out more here.

SUMMARY:Drop-in workshop: Zines & artist’s books with simple bookbinding
DESCRIPTION:The last in a series of four drop-in creative workshop days\, looking at ways to create DIY publications and explore self-expression. \nThis workshop offers a chance to try out\, practice\, or combine skills from our previous workshops in the series\, working on a theme of living with invisible illness. Try writing about your experiences\, express your ideas with simple printmaking techniques\, drawing\, or collage and create your own zine\, or bind your pages as a pamphlet or artist’s book. \nThe workshops are open to Medway residents 16+ years old who are affected by invisible illness – those with illnesses themselves\, but also carers\, partners\, friends or family etc. living in the Medway towns. The sessions are offered free thanks to a small grant from Involving Medway\, as part of Medway Clinical Commissioning Group’s work with community health. \nTaking place during December and January\, a time of year that people with illness can find difficult\, these workshops offer a non-festive oasis and a supportive\, uplifting space to explore self-reflection and creative skills. There will be a friendly welcome\, snacks and refreshments. \nYou don’t need to have attended previous days\, each class and drop-in session is a separate event and you are welcome to attend as many or few as you like. \nNo previous experience is needed\, this is a supportive session for you to self-reflect and try out making DIY publications as a way to cope with\, heal from\, or understand your situation in a different way. Participating may lead to communicating your feelings to other people\, or may offer useful tools to use privately for self care. \nA two-hour morning book binding class complements this drop-in session – please book in advance if you are interested in that too. The link is a pinned post on the Sick! Facebook group page.

SUMMARY:Printmaking for Zines - Sick! workshop
DESCRIPTION:A workshop for people who want to learn how to use printmaking to communicate ideas and stories in visual ways. In two hours\, artist Xtina Lamb will show you simple methods to create effective graphics with print techniques including relief printing and stencils. \nZines are small self-published magazines\, focused on a particular topic or theme. We’ll be looking at printmaking methods that go particularly well with zine-making. All the materials you need will be on hand\, and we’ll have a Risograph machine and inkjet printer as additional ways to reproduce multiples quickly. \nThe workshop is open to Medway residents 16+ years old who are affected by invisible illness – those with illnesses themselves\, but also carers\, partners\, friends or family etc. living in the Medway towns. \nNo previous experience of printmaking is needed\, this is a session for you to explore image making as a way to cope with\, heal from\, or understand invisible illness in different ways. You may chose to use the methods to create your own mini-zine\, or contribute to a collaborative zine\, or maybe use the skill to develop your own personal projects. \nIn the afternoon a separate 3 hour drop-in session will run\, allowing people to continue with their printmaking\, or read our collection of health-related zines\, or create zines in a variety of ways. There is no need to book for the drop-in session. \nThis is the second in a series of four workshop days through December 2017 and January 2018\, offered free thanks to a small grant from Involving Medway\, as part of Medway Clinical Commissioning Group’s work with community health. \nIf you live outside Medway but would like to join us\, please message us as we may be able to invite you too\, depending on availability.
