SUMMARY:Zine Workshop - Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:Join Butterfly Conservations Bog Squad in collaboration with the Edinburgh Zine Library for a fun workshop in a fantastic location at the Botanic Cottage\, RBGE! \nWhat is a zine? – A zine is a kind of mini mixed-media magazine which is handmade/self-published. They are made by many writers\, artists and creators on a range of themes\, interests or passions – see examples that Bog Squad have made for events at bogsquad.weebly.com/peatlands-for-people.html. Zines are a great way of getting information out there\, so can be tailored to any subject and can be easily reproduced with just a photocopier. They are a really fun and relaxing activity with lots of cutting and gluing involved to create something truly unique! \nWhat will we be doing? – This event will be a chance for attendees to hear about the work BC is doing in peatland restoration\, climate change\, sustainability and nature conservation. \nThere will be time for skill sharing\, networking and perhaps a walk outdoors (weather permitting) for inspiration. \nWe will be working on a collaborative zine on the topics discussed and attendees will also have the opportunity to make their own mini zines about their thoughts on the day. We’ll be providing all the materials – paper\, pens\, glue\, paint\, stamps\, stickers\, magazines/media to cut out – but if you have some art supplies/reference materials you’d like to use in your zine do feel free to bring them along! \nThis event is primarily being run for adults although interested young people are also more than welcome. \nHow to book – it is completely FREE TO ATTEND however the venue had LIMITED CAPACITY so we do ask that if you want to come along that you CONTACT US TO BOOK A SPACE. \nTO BOOK A SPACE PLEASE CONTACT – Rebecca Crawford on rcrawford@butterfly-conservation.org \nFor more zine workshops see our events page on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Pen Fight InHouse: Thomas Schmidinger - Rojava: Revolution\, War and the Future of Syria's Kurds
DESCRIPTION:Join Partisan Collective X Pen Fight and Pluto Press for an evening lecture and discussion with Thomas Schmidinger\, author of Rojava: Revolution\, War and the Future of Syria’s Kurds\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Kurdish territory of Rojava in Syria has become a watchword for radical democracy\, communalism and gender equality. But while Western radicals continue to project their own values onto the revolution\, the complexities of the situation are often overlooked or misunderstood.\n\n\n\n\n\nBased on over 17 years of research and fieldwork\, Thomas Schmidinger provides a detailed introduction to the history and political situation in Rojava. Outlining the history of the Kurds in Syria from the late Ottoman Empire until the Syrian civil war\, he describes the developments in Rojava since 2011: the protests against the regime\, the establishment of a Kurdish para-state\, the conflicts between the parties about the administration of the Kurdish territory and how the PYD and its People’s Councils rule the territory.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe book draws on interviews with political leaders of different parties\, civil society activists\, artists\, fighters and religious leaders in order to paint an complex picture of the historical conflict and the contemporary situation.\n\n\n\n\n\nThomas Schmidinger is a Political Scientist and Cultural Anthropologist based at the University of Vienna. He is Secretary General of the Austrian Association for Kurdish studies. He is the author of Rojava (Pluto\, 2018)\, which received the Mezlum Bagok award. He has written extensively on Kurdistan\, Sudan\, Kosovo\, jihadism\, migration and Muslim communities in Europa.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe author will be discussing his book\, and there will be time for a Q&A afterwards. Copies of Rojava: Revolution\, War and the Future of Syria’s Kurds will be available to purchase too.
