SUMMARY:Dream Babes Zine Readings
DESCRIPTION:Dream Babes is a long term project that explores science and speculative fiction as a productive strategy of queer resistance\, imaging futurity that does not depend on existing historical and social infrastructure. It has included science fiction porn screenings and talks\, a three-day programme of performance at Auto Italia South East\, a publication\, and a regular science fiction reading group for queer people of colour. \nThis event celebrates the launch of Dream Babes zine 2.0 published by PSS\, featuring contributions from: \nSophia Al Maria \nDanielle Brathwaite-Shirley \nAngela Chan and Xia Jia \nOrion J Facey \nBing Hao \nIrene Tokini Fubara Manuel \nImani Robinson \nAshkan Sepahvand \nDaniella Valz Gen \nVictoria Sin and Samuel R Delany \nDream Babes Zine 2.0 focuses on the questions that speculative fiction can ask which are especially important now – what if things were different? What if things stay the same? How can we realise the absurd in the familiar? \nPart of Site Gallery’s exhibition ‘Rewriting The Future‘ Public Programme.

SUMMARY:Workshop | Zine Making
DESCRIPTION:Zinester Sophie Sherwood will share with you the art of creating this classic\, low-fi\, DIY form of publication. They will be bringing zines from their own collections to share with and inspire you. \nPresented by Arnolfini as part of the Still I Rise expanded programme. \nThis workshop\, in conjunction with Still I Rise: Feminisms\, Gender\, Resistance – Act 3\, aims to look at everyday feminism and how we can bring together ideas to distribute to a wider audience through the power of zines. An accessible\, affordable way of sharing ideas and information\, totally independent of formal and commercial systems\, the Zine has been the activist’s go to tool for ever. \nSophie Sherwood is a visual artist living and working in Bristol and has recently completed an MA in Photography at UWE. She specialises in cameraless photographic creative workshops and zine making for all ages. \nMaterials and equipment will be provided\, but please bring anything from your own archive you’d particularly like to include (photocopied if it’s precious) for some old-school cutting and pasting. \nWe recommend a walk around the exhibition prior to the event to soak up the different forms of feminist activist expression that can offer up an inspiration or a space for self reflection. \nThe materials used could contain partial nudity. \nStill I Rise: Feminisms\, Gender\, Resistance – Act 3 is a large-scale exhibition of international artists\, highlighting the experiences of women and celebrating their triumphs – with an expanded programme of performances\, screenings\, workshops and talks filling Arnolfini through Autumn 2019.

SUMMARY:Oxford is my Home // Make a zine in a day!
DESCRIPTION:Do you call Oxford your home? \nEach of us has our own story of how we’ve found\, built or maybe even lost a home in Oxford. On Saturday 19th October\, we’ll be weaving all of these stories together into issue two of ‘Oxford is my Home’\, a community-made zine and we want your stories. \nJoin us any time between 10am and 4pm for a day of writing games\, storytelling\, poetry games and arts & crafts. We welcome all ages and abilities and you don’t need any prior experience of poetry or story-telling. If you don’t feel like you’d like to contribute your own story\, why not come and help us tell someone else’s? \nWhether you’re new to the city\, born-and-bred\, or anywhere in between\, you’re invited to collaborate and create art\, opinions\, poetry\, and stories around this complex and vital topic. The event is free and open to all. \nWhy? Many people come into Open House and ask us the same questions; ‘how can we solve homelessness? How can we build more affordable housing? Is anyone doing anything!?’ We think the answer lies in talking to each other. Oxford is full of people who are experts by lived-experience of how our housing system is failing and we won’t understand how to fix the sticky situation we’ve got ourselves into until we start listening to them. \nCopies of the original issue of ‘Oxford is my home’ can be found at the Oxford Poetry Library at any of their local market appearances. You can see where our big purple bike of books will be next at oxfordpoetrylibrary.co.uk \nWant to get involved but can’t make the date? Contact us on hello@openhouseoxford.org or oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com \nAs with all events at Open House this event is free\, however we do collect donations at the end of each event to cover speaker expenses and other running costs for Open House.\nIf you would like your bus fare to and from Open House refunding then please just ask one of our volunteers. \n… \nAccessibility and making your trip as comfortable as possible. \nOpen House is a single room shop with large windows that face out onto Little Clarendon Street\, a small shopping street. There is a small kitchen at the back with a single\, unisex toilet. We sometimes play music quietly but are happy to turn it off or down on request. \nOur front door is 87.5cm at the narrowest point and whilst the shop is accessible to wheelchairs\, at present we unfortunately are not able to provide a fully wheelchair accessible toilet. There is a 1.5m walk to the toilet from the nearest wheelchair accessible area. \nDirectly outside the shop there are free 30 minute parking bays and the restriction ends at 18.00. \nWe are working to ensure that our events are as accessible as possible to all our visitors. Open House is a dry space and there will be no alcohol at events. We are happy to provide interpreters or BSL Interpreters but as a tiny\, volunteer-led project we need advance notice. If you have any additional needs that you would like to discuss with us before visiting the shop\, please email us hello@openhouseoxford.org

SUMMARY:Brighton Zine Club
DESCRIPTION:Come and join Brighton Zine Network at our fortnightly(ish) zine club! Zine club is a place to make\, learn\, and talk about zines in an informal and encouraging space. It is also a place to connect with other zine-makers and zine-interested folk in Brighton\, with the aim of creating a collaborative and supportive zine community in the city. \nBasic materials (paper\, glue\, scissors\, pens\, etc)\, zines and ‘how-to’ guides will be provided\, as will biscuits! Everyone is welcome\, whether you’re an experienced zinester or you’ve never made a zine before. \nZine club will run from 2-5pm on Sundays; the dates for 2019 are 29th September\, 13th October\, 3rd and 17th November\, 1st December. \nZine club will be in the Cowley Club Library which is a private room accessed via the main Cowley Club cafe space on London Road or via the back door on Providence Place (see below for access details). \n——————————————————– \nWho is Brighton Zine Network? \nWe’re a small group of people with varying levels of zine experience\, all living in Brighton. Right now\, Brighton Zine Network is mostly just an idea in our heads! \nWe don’t have preconceived ideas about what BZN is or should be\, and we hope that the existence of the zine club will allow for the organic co-creation of a network\, involving everyone who attends. We believe in the spirit of DIY and DIT (do-it-together) culture; we think that how Brighton Zine Network grows and evolves in the future is something that everyone has a say in. \n——————————————————– \nZine club accessibility: \nThe group has been started by people who are all some combination of trans\, queer\, mad\, working class\, disabled and/or women! We want to continue to centre marginalized people in general. \nThe first five meetings will be in a private room at the Cowley Club. We’ve chosen this space because it is financially accessible\, wheelchair accessible and a rare non-capitalist space in Brighton. Zine club is free to attend; small donations towards the room hire are welcomed but not expected. \nAccess through the main club involves going both up and down a lot of narrow steps\, as well as around narrow corners. \nWheelchair and step-free access is by the back-door\, which is located in Providence Place. There is a very slight ‘lip’ on the doorframe into the room. The back door says 52a on it and is decorated with some very distinctive graffiti (see group photos). We will leave this door unlocked during the workshop. If you would like someone to come outside and meet you and open the door\, please send us a message in advance and we will give you a phone number to call. Once in the room there is an accessible toilet. \nThere will be no background music and folk are welcome to leave or arrive at any time. Folk are also welcome to put their headphones on and ignore others as we work and hang out. \nWe are committed to making the network and club as accessible as possible. If you have any additional accessibility needs please do get in touch with us and we will do our absolute best to meet them.

SUMMARY:Zine Making with Disability Arts Online at Sick! Festival\, Manchester
DESCRIPTION:When\n19 September 2019 – 20 September 2019\n12:00-7:00pm each day \nPrice: Free \n\nDescription\nZines\, or fanzines\, are self-published material made for little money and distributed cheaply. Their focus is not on profit\, but rather they have historically been used as a tool of political resistance\, often circumventing traditional publishing and distributing standards\, giving a voice to the underrepresented and marginalized. Though zines were forged in the fires of oppression\, they grew and expanded to other subcultures\, such as punk and Riot Grrrl\, science fiction writers\, comic makers\, artists and designers\, in addition to their foundation of anti-fascism\, anti-racism\, and anti-sexism. \nJoin Disability Arts Online in creating a zine based on the themes of this year’s Sick! Festival. Materials and prompts will be provided\, as well as a selection of zines to flip through for inspiration and enjoyment. This is an all-day event\, and all are welcome to drop in and out and create as many pages as desired. \nFind out more about Sick! Festival.

SUMMARY:Hackney Comic and Zine Fest
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 8th September 2019\, Hackney Comic + Zine Fair will be taking over London Fields Arches for a celebration of sequential art and the people that produce it. Over 40 artists\, writers and publishers will be there\, with a huge range of styles\, genres and approaches to the comics medium available to purchase. \nPresented by London Fields Brewery\, it will be a whole day packed full of comics\, art and beer. Entry is free\, so there is nothing to stop you from coming along\, buying some comics\, chatting to the creators and having a drink with us. \nThe aim of the event is to showcase the many different forms and genres that sequential art can take – especially in the independent\, self-published and small-press scene. No matter if you’ve never picked up a comic before or if you have boxes full of thousands of them in the spare room at your dad’s house (sorry dad\, I swear I’ll move those someday) then with work covering everything from autobiographical travel journals\, abstract introspection\, sci-fi romance and struggles with mental health\, there will be something for you to enjoy at HCZF. \nAs well as our talented bunch of creators\, we’ll be joined by various communities\, websites\, podcasts and groups that are focused on promoting the medium and spreading their passion about it as far and wide as possible\, and we will have drop-in workshops throughout the day for you to try your hand at making comics yourself. \nWe also have beer. Lots of beer. Drink the beer\, please*. \n*Responsibly.

SUMMARY:Come make Zines with the Edinburgh Zine Library for 13 to 18 year olds
DESCRIPTION:Zines are small books\, pamphlets or magazines that you make yourself. Some people write zines to share their love of something – a hobby\, fandom\, band\, type of food or a place. Sometimes people write zines to share knowledge – like a paper version of YouTube contouring tutorials. Sometimes people write zines to tell their story\, especially if they feel different or like they don’t see themselves reflected in magazines or TV. They can be filled with writings\, drawings\, photos\, collages\, whatever you like! You can keep them to yourself\, share them with your friends\, or share them with the world. \nIn this workshop with members of the Edinburgh Zine Library you’ll get the chance to make your own zine to take home – with zines from the library for inspiration. \nEdinburgh Zine Library is an archive and reference library of contemporary zines housed in the Art & Design Library at Edinburgh Central Library.
