SUMMARY:Weirdo Zine Fest at Sutton House
DESCRIPTION:Weirdo Zine Fest is a self-publishing fair celebrating DIY cultural production by radical and marginalised people. Preference for tables goes to women\, queers\, POC\, disabled people\, trans people\, fat people\, sex workers and anyone who is otherwise marginalised. \nThe first fair was last year at DIY Space for London and it’s back for a second year in collaboration with Sutton House and Breaker’s Yard in Hackney! This year’s fair will include 20+ stallholders\, as well as an afterparty featuring music and performances (details TBC!). Stallholders and performers will be announced in late May. \nInterested in tabling? Fill out this form by 10th May 2017:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdY17WqgaDqePGxZlra2WEFcX2Tnd7wBOJ1biG8nsZErGrnrg/viewform?usp=sf_link Anyone who identifies as marginalised is encouraged to apply. Weirdo Zine Fest supports new zinemakers\, so we would also like to encourage new and first time zine makers! \nAdmission\nEntry to just the zine fair is free. Normal admission charges apply to visit the zine fair and the historic rooms. There will be a School of Anarchy exhibition throughout the house. Price of admission will also cover entry to the after party in the evening. \nThe National Trust is a charity\, Sutton House is giving this space for free\, if you wish to support the preservation of this important community space\, please consider paying the admission charge if you are able to. \nAccessibility\nThe zine fair and afterparty will be on the ground floor\, which is wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately the historic rooms are not wheelchair accessible. We have an accessible toilet which is also designated gender neutral – a first for the National Trust. \nSutton House Queered\nBuilt in 1535 by Tudor Statesman Ralph Sadlier\, Sutton House is the oldest domestic building in Hackney. Throughout its almost 500 year history\, the house has been a boys’ school\, a girls’ school\, a church institute\, offices\, and a squat. The house is now owned by the National Trust\, and has a strong focus on working with the local community. Sutton House was the first National Trust property to celebrate LGBT History Month\, and the first to introduce a gender neutral toilet. Sutton House Queered is a year- long programme that aims to question and disrupt\, to challenge and celebrate. Much like Sutton House’s varied and colourful history\, Queer is fluid and ever-changing\, and presents a great opportunity for us to explore the National Trust’s Prejudice and Pride theme\, marking the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality. \nSchool of Anarchy\nIn April 1985 a group of 8 squatters made Sutton House their home. They sent a letter to local residents which read:\n“As you’ve probably noticed\, something is happening at Sutton House- several of us have moved in and are hoping to convert it into a kind of community centre.”\nThey proposed opening the house to the public\, running a café and arts and craft workshops for local community members. They renamed their new home ‘The Blue House’ and hosted rock concerts here. This short but colourful era in Sutton House’s unusual history lasted less than a year\, but has left its mark on how we run today\, the community are at the heart of everything we do. As well as decorating the house with vibrant graffiti art\, some of which is retained today\, the squatters wrote anti-fascist\, anti-Thatcher and feminist political slogans on the doors of the rooms. Sutton House’s strong activist roots have inspired our Summer of Anarchy\, which will explore LGBTQ activism. \n#SuttonHouseQueered

SUMMARY:London Radical Bookfair 2017
DESCRIPTION:Radical booksellers\, publishers\, artists and activists of all stripes are setting up in the Great Hall at Goldsmiths University to host the 5th London Radical Bookfair.  \nWith over 130 exhibitors and 20 guest speakers\, this will be a unique gathering of progressive readers\, thinkers and doers\, in a celebration of radical publishing and politics.  \nThe free event is organised by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers (ARB)\,  which formed in 2011 to raise awareness of the radical book trade. The fair provides an annual opportunity to bring Britain’s radical booksellers together to meet in person with publishers and the reading public. \nAnd it’s also an opportunity for us to host award ceremonies for the ARB’s two annual book prizes — the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing and the Little Rebels Children’s Book Award. Shortlisted authors from the two awards will give talks and participate in panel discussions throughout the day. \nAs in previous years\, we’ll be showcasing the depth and breadth of radical publishing. While there are currently other book fairs dedicated to progressive titles\, they tend to focus on tightly defined political traditions. The aim of the London Radical Bookfair is to be a broad church that brings together these traditions and make them accessible to a wider audience. \nThis year’s bookfair is supported by the Centre for Cultural Studies\, with the Departments of English and Comparative Literature\, Media and Communications\, Politics and International Relations\, Sociology\, Visual Culture\, and Goldsmiths Press.  Goldsmiths\, University of London. http://www.gold.ac.uk/

We aim to create inclusive events for all women & non binary folk – allies are welcome but please be aware of safe spaces and what they mean to feminist and lgbtq communites. \nIn an effort to make our events interactive\, the Artists featured in our Grrrl In Print Zine will also be tabling at the event. If you wish to table please submit a 1 page zine spread to hello@grrrlzinefair.com within the theme of Contemporary DIY. Or send any questions to that same address. \nWe want to keep our events free but ask for a suggested £3 donation in order to function in this cruel capitalist world hehe.\nThis is non compulsory! If you can afford to give as little or as much as you feel comfortable with giving we would greatly appreciate it and keep providing you with events ☺ \n♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
