SUMMARY:Weirdo Zine Fest 2019 (London)
DESCRIPTION:Weirdo Zine Fest is a self-publishing fair celebrating DIY cultural production by radical and marginalised people. Weirdo Zine Fest has previously taken place in partnership with DIY Space for London\, the National Trust and Leeds Libraries. This year we’re returning to London as part of Science Gallery London’s ON EDGE season to run an edition of the fair which focuses on zines exploring anxiety! \nFor this edition of the fair\, preference for tables goes to anyone who has experience of anxiety\, but as always women\, queers\, POC\, disabled people\, trans people\, fat people\, sex workers and anyone who is otherwise marginalised are particularly encouraged to apply! \nThe event will showcase the work of 20-30 stallholders and other exciting things happening too (details tbc!). Stallholders will be announced in early October. \nInterested in tabling? Tables are free! Fill out this form by 20th September: https://forms.gle/vThYcJYwzWuQ7eaZ9\nYou will be advised if your application is accepted in late September. Anyone who identifies as marginalised and making work about mental health is encouraged to apply. Weirdo Zine Fest supports new zinemakers\, so we would also like to encourage new and first time zine makers! \nAdmission\nEntry to the zine fair and exhibitions at Science Gallery London is free. \nAccessibility\nAll areas of Science Gallery are accessible by level access\, by lift and by wheelchair. Wheelchair-accessible toilets are located on the ground and lower ground floor of the Gallery and the First Floor Studio. The Wheelchair-accessible toilets located in the first floor studio are outside of the main Gallery visitor access areas. Please contact a member of staff if you require assistance during your visit. \nWe will be using a room in Science Gallery London as a quiet space (location tbc closer to the date). This room will also contain zine making supplies to allow for people in the space to make things away from the busy zine fair. \nThere are both gendered toilets and accessible unisex/gender neutral toilets available in the building. \nFurther accessibility information is available here: https://london.sciencegallery.com/visit/accessibility \nON EDGE: LIVING IN AN AGE OF ANXIETY\nWe all experience anxiety to a greater or lesser extent at some point in our lives. \nON EDGE\, Science Gallery London’s new season\, investigates ways of living with anxiety\, and how anxious states of being can fuel positive action. \nRunning from 19 Sep 2019 – 19 Jan 2020\, the exhibition opens a critical conversation around the causes of and responses to anxiety in contemporary society\, making visible the connections between individual experiences of anxiety and the wider societal conditions that frame those experiences. \nThrough artworks\, and scientific and collaborative projects\, the exhibition and events explore anxiety from many different perspectives. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 8th September 2019\, Hackney Comic + Zine Fair will be taking over London Fields Arches for a celebration of sequential art and the people that produce it. Over 40 artists\, writers and publishers will be there\, with a huge range of styles\, genres and approaches to the comics medium available to purchase. \nPresented by London Fields Brewery\, it will be a whole day packed full of comics\, art and beer. Entry is free\, so there is nothing to stop you from coming along\, buying some comics\, chatting to the creators and having a drink with us. \nThe aim of the event is to showcase the many different forms and genres that sequential art can take – especially in the independent\, self-published and small-press scene. No matter if you’ve never picked up a comic before or if you have boxes full of thousands of them in the spare room at your dad’s house (sorry dad\, I swear I’ll move those someday) then with work covering everything from autobiographical travel journals\, abstract introspection\, sci-fi romance and struggles with mental health\, there will be something for you to enjoy at HCZF. \nAs well as our talented bunch of creators\, we’ll be joined by various communities\, websites\, podcasts and groups that are focused on promoting the medium and spreading their passion about it as far and wide as possible\, and we will have drop-in workshops throughout the day for you to try your hand at making comics yourself. \nWe also have beer. DESCRIPTION:Swansea Zine Fest is a not-for-profit event held to celebrate fanzines and DIY self-publishing. The very first SZF was held in 2018. The organisers are three Swansea-based zinesters and activists. \n​ \nA zine (pronounced “zeen\,” as in “maga-zine”) is a self-published\, small circulation\, non-commercial booklet or magazine\, usually produced by one person or a few individuals. Zines can include personal essays\, political discussions\, fiction\, do-it-yourself tips\, articles about music or movies\, comics\, poetry\, reviews – anything under the sun! \n​ \nCome along to buy and swap zines and DIY publications from a range of zinesters and creators from Swansea and further afield. We will also be holding some zine readings\, craft space\, free zine giveaways\, and a chance to make your own zine! \n· Free entry\n· Fully accessible venue\n· Open to all \nThe event is open to people of all ages; please note however that some content on sale and in the zine readings may not be appropriate for children so they should be supervised. Tearing It Up\, Somerset House and Somerset House Studios residents OOMK\, present PROCESS!\, a two day festival celebrating independent media and making\, bringing together established and emerging designers\, artists\, activists and publishers to explore\, interrogate and share approaches to creative and collaborative process. In the context of high speed media and access to infinite information\, how do we create time\, space and approaches that can enable us to process the social and political climate and create new media and outputs? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSomerset House Studio artists OOMK co-curate this unique weekend\, including a programme of talks\, workshops and installations alongside a zine fair. Each strand will highlight different processes behind organising\, designing and publishing\, whilst consciously considering developments in interdependent industry\, digital reach and opportunities for international relations. \nStay tuned for the full announcement of exhibitor stalls\, talks\, workshops and the celebratory closing party to come. \nPlease be aware that some artworks and opinions expressed may not be suitable for young children. \nOne of My Kind (OOMK) is a collaborative publishing practice led by Rose Nordin\, Sofia Niazi and Heiba Lamara. Working together since 2014\, OOMK make\, publish and distribute books and printed works which arise from self-initiated projects. OOMK also commission new works by women artists and co-curate DIY Cultures\, one of the UK’s largest annual independent publishing fairs. With a focus on self-publishing and education\, OOMK founded and run a community Risograph printing press in East London\,  Rabbits Road Press. OOMK are currently residents at Somerset House Studios. \nOOMK Zine is a highly visual\, handcrafted small-press publication. Printed biannually\, its content pivots upon the imaginations\, creativity and spirituality of women. Each issue centres around a different creative theme\, with more general content exploring topics of faith\, activism and identity.
