SUMMARY:Zine Workshop with Lu Williams\, Grrrl Zine Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Grrrl Zine Library has a new home at the Old Waterworks. Come along to a zine workshop in our new library space.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nZine making with Grrrl Zine Fair is an adaptable way of making objects and literature outside of academic or capitalist endeavours. It is a way of elevating craft labour and democratised production in a context which is accessible to communities outside of the insular art world. \nZine making is a versatile process that can pull together ideas\, encourage collaboration\, function as a method of self care and act as a vehicle for accessibility. \nMaterials are provided during the workshop\, however it is possible for participants to work with their own materials if they wish to bring them\, such as their own artwork or writing. TOW’s risograph printer will also be available for participants to reproduce numerous copies of their zine or work collaboratively. \nAbout \nLu Williams is an artist and founder of Grrrl Zine Fair. They founded Grrrl Zine Fair in 2015\, which hosts zine workshops\, Grrrl in Print (a printed collective zine) and a 300+ feminist zine library based at the Old Waterworks\, which tours the UK and has been exhibited at British Film Institute\, V&A Museum and Art Book in China\, Beijing. Grrrl Zine Fair platforms women\, trans and non-binary artists\, putting diversity and accessibility at the forefront of their artistic practice.

SUMMARY:Oxford is my Home // Make a zine in a day!
DESCRIPTION:Do you call Oxford your home? \nEach of us has our own story of how we’ve found\, built or maybe even lost a home in Oxford. On Saturday 19th October\, we’ll be weaving all of these stories together into issue two of ‘Oxford is my Home’\, a community-made zine and we want your stories. \nJoin us any time between 10am and 4pm for a day of writing games\, storytelling\, poetry games and arts & crafts. We welcome all ages and abilities and you don’t need any prior experience of poetry or story-telling. If you don’t feel like you’d like to contribute your own story\, why not come and help us tell someone else’s? \nWhether you’re new to the city\, born-and-bred\, or anywhere in between\, you’re invited to collaborate and create art\, opinions\, poetry\, and stories around this complex and vital topic. The event is free and open to all. \nWhy? Many people come into Open House and ask us the same questions; ‘how can we solve homelessness? How can we build more affordable housing? Is anyone doing anything!?’ We think the answer lies in talking to each other. Oxford is full of people who are experts by lived-experience of how our housing system is failing and we won’t understand how to fix the sticky situation we’ve got ourselves into until we start listening to them. \nCopies of the original issue of ‘Oxford is my home’ can be found at the Oxford Poetry Library at any of their local market appearances. You can see where our big purple bike of books will be next at oxfordpoetrylibrary.co.uk \nWant to get involved but can’t make the date? Contact us on hello@openhouseoxford.org or oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com \nAs with all events at Open House this event is free\, however we do collect donations at the end of each event to cover speaker expenses and other running costs for Open House.\nIf you would like your bus fare to and from Open House refunding then please just ask one of our volunteers. \n… \nAccessibility and making your trip as comfortable as possible. \nOpen House is a single room shop with large windows that face out onto Little Clarendon Street\, a small shopping street. There is a small kitchen at the back with a single\, unisex toilet. We sometimes play music quietly but are happy to turn it off or down on request. \nOur front door is 87.5cm at the narrowest point and whilst the shop is accessible to wheelchairs\, at present we unfortunately are not able to provide a fully wheelchair accessible toilet. There is a 1.5m walk to the toilet from the nearest wheelchair accessible area. \nDirectly outside the shop there are free 30 minute parking bays and the restriction ends at 18.00. \nWe are working to ensure that our events are as accessible as possible to all our visitors. Open House is a dry space and there will be no alcohol at events. We are happy to provide interpreters or BSL Interpreters but as a tiny\, volunteer-led project we need advance notice. If you have any additional needs that you would like to discuss with us before visiting the shop\, please email us hello@openhouseoxford.org

SUMMARY:Workshop | Zine Making
DESCRIPTION:Zinester Sophie Sherwood will share with you the art of creating this classic\, low-fi\, DIY form of publication. They will be bringing zines from their own collections to share with and inspire you. \nPresented by Arnolfini as part of the Still I Rise expanded programme. \nThis workshop\, in conjunction with Still I Rise: Feminisms\, Gender\, Resistance – Act 3\, aims to look at everyday feminism and how we can bring together ideas to distribute to a wider audience through the power of zines. An accessible\, affordable way of sharing ideas and information\, totally independent of formal and commercial systems\, the Zine has been the activist’s go to tool for ever. \nSophie Sherwood is a visual artist living and working in Bristol and has recently completed an MA in Photography at UWE. She specialises in cameraless photographic creative workshops and zine making for all ages. \nMaterials and equipment will be provided\, but please bring anything from your own archive you’d particularly like to include (photocopied if it’s precious) for some old-school cutting and pasting. \nWe recommend a walk around the exhibition prior to the event to soak up the different forms of feminist activist expression that can offer up an inspiration or a space for self reflection. \nThe materials used could contain partial nudity. \nStill I Rise: Feminisms\, Gender\, Resistance – Act 3 is a large-scale exhibition of international artists\, highlighting the experiences of women and celebrating their triumphs – with an expanded programme of performances\, screenings\, workshops and talks filling Arnolfini through Autumn 2019.
