SUMMARY:The Recovery: exhibition and zine launch
DESCRIPTION:Having previously questioned perceptions of print media with her screenprints in the style of mock newspaper front-pages\, for the latest iteration of The Recovery\, Emily turned to the the zine format. Partly in response to the significant community archive of independently published zines of the Forgotten Zine Archive at A4 Studios\, she created a series of The Recovery zines. The launch event will also feature a curated selection of political zines from the Forgotten Zine Archive\, as well as a hands-on zine-making workshop facilitated by Emily McGardle and Tom Maher of the Forgotten Zine Archive on Saturday 11th February\, from 12 -5pm. \nThe event will begin with readings from selected zines\, including from The Recovery\, with a relaxed and informal panel discussion to follow. DESCRIPTION:Zines are self-made mini magazines that have been influential in representing the narratives\, politics and sub-cultures of groups that are typically under-represented by mainstream culture. \nThey provide an opportunity for individuals to use craft techniques to reflect their identity through creative self-expression. The art of zine making is simple\, easy and can provide an outlet for self-meditation and social activism. \nThis workshop for LGBTQI people of colour will explore our experiences; learn about the historical use of zines within social activism\, and work to create zines that challenge racism and homophobia in the UK. \nThis is a FREE workshop but booking is required – please reserve your place. \nThis workshop is in collaboration with Rainbow Noir and Archives+. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate LGBT History Month at Leeds City Museum with this FREE programme of films\, stalls\, activities and talks organised by Leeds Queer Film Festival on 18 February 2017 11-3pm. All are welcome to come along and get involved! \nA selection of films on LGBT History from our past festivals will be screened and we’ll be having a panel discussion on local LGBT history. \nThere’ll be stalls of various local LGBT community groups so that you can find out about the great long-running and more recent LGBT support groups\, campaigning groups and social groups in our city. This will be a great opportunity to find out about the work they do\, how to get involved\, support them\, or how to get access to services you need. \nWe’ll also have various activities and workshops so you can tell your own story or just have some fun! They’ll all be on a drop-in basis throughout the day (apart from the filmmaking workshop).
