About this Event
Zine making with Grrrl Zine Fair is an adaptable way of making objects and literature outside of academic or capitalist endeavours. It is a way of elevating craft labour and democratised production in a context which is accessible to communities outside of the insular art world.
Zine making is a versatile process that can pull together ideas, encourage collaboration, function as a method of self care and act as a vehicle for accessibility.
Materials are provided during the workshop, however it is possible for participants to work with their own materials if they wish to bring them, such as their own artwork or writing. TOW’s risograph printer will also be available for participants to reproduce numerous copies of their zine or work collaboratively.
About
Lu Williams is an artist and founder of Grrrl Zine Fair. They founded Grrrl Zine Fair in 2015, which hosts zine workshops, Grrrl in Print (a printed collective zine) and a 300+ feminist zine library based at the Old Waterworks, which tours the UK and has been exhibited at British Film Institute, V&A Museum and Art Book in China, Beijing. Grrrl Zine Fair platforms women, trans and non-binary artists, putting diversity and accessibility at the forefront of their artistic practice.

Big Joanie is a black feminist punk band, like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl. Big Joanie emerged from the London DIY scene at First Timers, and have swiftly become a DIY punk household name.

Village Green 2017 is a multi-art form and music festival, produced by Metal Culture. We’re building a zine library with InSitu London (projects include a video piece for the Tate Modern Deadhouse Installation, Exhibition design and installation for Somerset House and Future Icons, a bespoke installation and night showcasing a range of up-and-coming London based rappers.) Soft furnishings, projections, sculptures will surround our collection of feminist / queer zines from across the globe.

Music Workshops
Freer Ideas is a project that aims to fuse music with an intersectional feminist lense that includes queer, anti-racist, dis/ability and class politics to raise awareness social and political injustices. Freer Ideas uses music as a medium to express feelings and ideas on these issues.
Music Workshops will be free for Village Green and all materials are provided. Please arrive at the Grrrl Zine tent early to reserve a music workshop space or email hello@grrrlzinefair.com with either ‘Drum workshop reservation’ or ‘Guitar Workshop reservation’.
⭐Drum Workshop –
Jaca Freer is a drummer and percussionist who performs regularly with several UK based queer feminist bands. They are currently gigging and/or recording with Colour Me Wednesday, ¡Ay, Carmela!, Block Fort and Hands. They teach drums privately from their home in South London on a pay-what-you-can donation basis.
⭐ Guitar Workshop –
Estella Adeyeri is guitar and vocals in JUNK., Bass in Big Joanie and Witching Waves and is a part of Decolonise Festival Organisation. She has also taught guitar and band workshops with Girls Rock London.
⭐ Portable Print Studio
Portable Print Studio will be running a drop in screen printing workshop during the day at Village Green. You can take part for free and receive your own personalised tote bag.
Portable Print Studio is an artist-led project. By sharing our knowledge & expertise of the screen print process our aim is to provide a platform for people to engage in and learn a new skill in an environment that naturally encourages and promotes creativity, experimentation & play.
Portable Print Studio is a new creative project founded by Sarah Simmonds. Sarah graduated with both an M.A & B.A in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art & University of Brighton. She has participated in various group exhibitions in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium & India. She has been an artist in residence at BBK Kulturwerk, Berlin, Cite des Arts, Paris & Sandarbh, India.
⭐ Shadow Sistxrs Fight Club
Shadow Sistxrs run workshops in self-protection physical and psychic, learning self defence martial arts techniques, holistic dance movement and delve into the worlds of herbs and crystals. It is run by Ayesha Tan Jones and Monique Etienne.
Ayesha Tan Jones is a Eurasian artist who graduated Central Saint Martins, London in 2016. She works with issues concerning the energy, form and identity of the Female Spiritual, placing this archetypical figure at the centre of a radiant and humming cosmic world view. In June 2016, Ayesha was awarded the Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s graduate residency award that culminated with a show in March 2017.
Monique Etienne has been practicing martial arts and dance since she was 7 years old. She is a black belt martial artist and dancer, studying ballet for 10 years. Monique will teach some basic self defence skills and dance therapy movements. Ayesha Tan-Jones will give a small introduction into protective herbs and crystals.
⭐ Arts Sisterhood UK
Arts Sisterhood UK is a unique, grassroots Arts & Mental Health organisation that offers women and non-binary people affordable art therapy classes across the UK. In 2016, Founder, Ali Strick, created this organisation as a direct response to the growing cuts to government funding for mental health services in the UK, with the main aim of offering a safe, inclusive and supportive community to the marginalised, rejected and neglected who can’t afford expensive private therapy. Since conception, Arts Sisterhood have held monthly classes in at the alternative community-run venue, DIY Space for London in Peckham, as well as some in Glasgow, with classes regularly selling out. Taught by artists and supervised by an accredited psychotherapist, their classes take attendees on a journey of self exploration and healing. During the class, they guide the women along a route starting with an initial word, feeling or thought, through to immersing them in personal and collaborative artistic expression, to end up with an exciting final piece of art, which is then discussed by the entire class, without judgement, then praised and celebrated.
⭐ Nail Transphobia
Nail Transphobia tackles transphobia through nail art, it’s fabulous activism! Founder Charlie Craggs travels around the UK with her pop up nail salon, giving people the chance to sit down and have a chat with a trans person, Charlie explains, “what I’m really trying to do with my campaign, as well as educate, is humanise the issue and show that trans people are just normal (actually pretty nice) people; I want people to go away with more than just a manicure, I want them to go away an ally. I’m trying to change hearts and minds a nail at a time.” Since setting up the campaign in 2013, Charlie has travelled around the UK nailing transphobia everywhere from prestigious institutions like the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Science Museum to the Festivals like Gay Pride London and Fringe Festival, and has collaborated with brands like Lush, Asos and Selfridges. Charlie has been featured in The Guardian, Teen Vougue, The Independent and The BBC, amoung many others and was ranked #1 on the Observer’s 2016 New Radicals list.
Charlie will be offering free manicures in exchange for a chat. There will be approximately 20 slots throughout the day, please arrive early.
⭐ GRRRL ZINE
There will be materials available throughout the day in the self build workshop space for zine making, along with Grrrl’s mini zine ‘How to make a well good zine’ to guide you through cutting and pasting.

Aside from the self publishing fair, everything in the Grrrl area will be free. Please arrive early to secure a space at the workshops. Workshop and line up timings will be released soon. Please bring cash for the fair. Grrrl Zine Fair is family friendly, however some of the zine content may be explicit so please be aware of this if bringing young children to the fair.

Grrrl Zine Fair is run by local artist Lu Williams, an organisation that puts on events celebrating DIY creativity with a political undercurrent. At the forefront of its ethos is the positive promotion of creative output made by women, lqbtqi and non binary people. However the area welcomes all genders, ages and abilities, priding itself on inclusivity. Grrrl Zine Fair aims to create an environment free from harassment and operates a safer spaces policy, encouraging young girls in particular, to party without intimidation or harrasment.

-Village Green is situated in a beautiful Victorian park with good pathway and road systems running throughout, however many of the activities and stages are situated on grass fields.

– Village Green provide a 2:1 ticket scheme for individuals who would be unable to attend Village Green without bringing a personal assistant. Please contact them if you require an additional ticket.
ACCESSIBLE PARKING PASS
– Village Green have a very limited number of accessible parking spaces within the park for blue badge permit holders. These spaces will be allocated on a ‘first come first served basis’. Please contact them to book a space.

– There will be general warning signs around the 2 main stages if strobe lighting will be used. Due to the nature of the artists it is likely that strobe lighting will be used throughout the performances.
