Will there be workshops?

We have some exciting TOP SECRET plans brewing around workshops and other Edinburgh Zine Festival events, so stay tuned…

Covid-19

As described in our To The Front policy, we prioritise applications from people underrepresented at zine fairs, at DIY cultural events and in mainstream arts and culture. It would be hypocritical to both prioritise disabled zine makers and zine makers who are carers without also taking the risks of the on-going Covid-19 pandemic seriously.

As at previous zine fests, we will expect people who table with us, organisers and attendees to wear face masks at the Zine Fest if they are able to. This is not something we can legally enforce but if we feel that people aren’t working together to make EZF2024 as safe as possible for everyone, this may affect whether we feel confident to organise future zine fests.

Contact Us

You can message us via CuratorSpace about your application, or email edinburghzinelibrary@gmail.com.

Please bear in mind that we are a small team all organising the zine fest alongside work, studying, caring, surviving (and occasionally zine making…) We will try and get back to you as quickly as possible, but it may take us some time to respond.

Edinburgh Zine Fest 2022

Edinburgh Zine Fest will be an affordable, accessible, welcoming and inclusive space to explore DIY self-publishing and zines. An exciting new partnership between Fruitmarket and Edinburgh Zine Library, it will bring a zine-shaped space to Fruitmarket’s annual celebration of artists’ book culture. The Edinburgh Zine Fest will take place alongside the Artist Bookmarket and will provide a space for non-profit forms of self-publishing, showcasing some of the amazing and exciting things happening in zines. It will include in person and virtual elements (so you don’t need to travel to Edinburgh to join in!). A zine fest happening in tandem with the artist’s bookmarket will also illuminate some of the exciting overlaps and intersections between zines, artists books and other forms of self-publishing.

More information on Edinburgh Zine Fest 2022 coming soon, and applications for tables will open on December 20th, 2021!

Makin’ Babies and the Law: A zine-making workshop

Learn about the law regulating fertility treatment and feminist critiques of the same. Explore the legislation and case law which regulates embryo production and the devastating consequences this regulation can have for people who want to make babies (particularly women, trans-men and non-binary folk). Learn about the history of zines and then contribute pages to a collaboratively created zine addressing the issues discussed. No prior knowledge/experience needed!

This event is part of the Being Human Festival and is organised by the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society at the University of Edinburgh in partnership with Edinburgh Zine Library.

Come make Zines with the Edinburgh Zine Library for 9 to 12 year olds

Zines are small books that you make yourself. Often, people make them to tell stories from their life, about themselves, their friends or family or where they live, to share things that they love or to teach people about things that they know about. You can draw and write and collage about whatever you want – we’ve got zines in the library about cats, slime, bands, buses, myths and legends, and more. Zines can be about anything!

In this workshop with members of the Edinburgh Zine Library, you’ll learn how to make your own mini-zine, and will leave with a finished zine, or a work in progress, that you can photocopy and share with your friends.

Edinburgh Zine Library is an archive and reference library of contemporary zines housed in the Art & Design Library at Edinburgh Central Library.

Come make Zines with the Edinburgh Zine Library for 13 to 18 year olds

Zines are small books, pamphlets or magazines that you make yourself. Some people write zines to share their love of something – a hobby, fandom, band, type of food or a place. Sometimes people write zines to share knowledge – like a paper version of YouTube contouring tutorials. Sometimes people write zines to tell their story, especially if they feel different or like they don’t see themselves reflected in magazines or TV. They can be filled with writings, drawings, photos, collages, whatever you like! You can keep them to yourself, share them with your friends, or share them with the world.

In this workshop with members of the Edinburgh Zine Library you’ll get the chance to make your own zine to take home – with zines from the library for inspiration.

Unfinished Zine Club

Come one, come all, come zine!

We’re running our very relaxed (almost horizontal) zine club at Forest again! There’ll be materials to make zines, good chat, falafel wraps, and coffee. If you’re new to the world of zines, or working on a zine already (at whatever stage) come on down.

As well as zine-making, we’ll be running a cataloging station for all you would-be zine librarians. Learn how we organise our zines and help us get our collection online! Or just pop in to find out more about what we do and how to get involved in the zine library!

All EZL events have a safer spaces agreement, found on our website. Forest is level-access but the toilets are downstairs. We’ll be sitting at the back by the counter with a big sign on our table that reads ‘Edinburgh Zine Library’. If you’re anxious about coming, want to get in touch before hand, or need further accessibility information then get us on facebook, or email edinburghzinelibrary@gmail.com.e
